COFER-WASH: Consortium for Education and Research in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Access to clean water and improved sanitation are preconditions to survival and good health of people and thus critical to sustainable development. Educational approaches of good quality, taking into account local habits and prior knowledge of students and well-connected to local curricula play an important role in conveying relevant knowledge and skills in the field of WASH.

The COFER-WASH cluster is a new collaborative network of seven academic institutions in Switzerland (Eawag-Sandec, UNIBAS-Swiss TPH, UNINE, FHNW, FHO, PHZG and SUPSI) each active in the sector of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in both education and research. As project partners from the South, institutions from Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia are involved. The COFER-WASH encompasses institutions committed with research, innovation, education and training targeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #6 that is to "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all" and SDGs 4 and 3. A key feature of COFER WASH is that it fosters a solution-oriented holistic set of operations designed to achieve the aforementioned SDGs.

COFER-WASH is structured in five modules:

· Module 1: WASH for Schools

· Module 2: WASH for Universities

· Module 3: CAS WASH for Professionals

· Module 4: Piloting, Evaluation and Optimization

· Module 5: Preparing for Application

Teachers, students and researcher in Switzerland as well as in the South will develop tools (MOD 1-3), evaluate the context-specific feasibility of their implementation through multiple pilots, review their impact and explore the positive and negative effects of the outcome (MOD 4-5). Moving on from MOD1 to MOD3, the technical aspects in knowledge transfer increases. Both components "education" and "research" are embedded and co-exist in the different modules.

SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland), FHNW (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland), UNINE (University of Neuchâtel), PHZG (University of Teacher Education Zug), UNIBAS-Swiss TPH (University of Basel, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute), EAWAG-Sandec (Eawag: Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technolo-gy, Department Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development)
